Ultimate Frisbee
Ultimate Frisbee is a highly aerobic game that requires true team effort. It has low equipment costs and best of all, uses no referees so that players have to call their own fouls and resolve any disputes. There is an emphasis on the “spirit of the game” in which fun, personal integrity, and honorable competition take the place of the “win at all costs” attitude that is far too prevalent in sports these days.

Coaches: Kris Van Gieson and Skyler Vella are excited to be coaching Hyla’s Ultimate Frisbee team again this year. This is Hyla’s 18th year participating in the Puget Sound Ultimate League, a league with about 30 middle school teams. We are very fortunate to be part of the longest running and largest middle school league in the country. Kris has been coaching Ultimate at Hyla for at least 7 years. Skyler played on Hyla’s team back in ’96, and then went on to organize and captain the high school team. During college, he played Ultimate for Western Washington’s team, making many return visits to Hyla to help coach before coming to work at the school full time.
Practices:
Practices are held Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:15 to 4:45 PM on any day that school is in session. If outside of school commitments conflict with these practice times, please let Skyler know.

Transportation:
To the games: The Hyla bus will travel from Bainbridge to Seattle for our games. You have the option to meet Kris and the bus at Hyla well before the ride, or to meet in the cafeteria area on the ferry at the beginning of the sailing. Prior to each game, your student will learn the anticipated ferry times, as well as Hyla drop off and pick up times.
Return: On the way home, we will assume that all students will be picked up at Hyla unless you let us know that you would prefer to pick up your athlete at the ferry terminal. We will have a cell phone with us to call if we are on a later boat than expected.
Come Watch Our Games: Parents are welcome to come to games. If you come to a game, please let us know if your child will be riding with you to and from the games. If you wish to brave the bus with us, please make arrangements with the coaches.
Equipment:
Footwear: Rubberized soccer cleats are ideal for practice and games, each player must have a pair. These should be worn to every practice and every game. No metal cleats, football or baseball cleats are allowed for safety reasons. The soccer cleats don’t need to be fancy, just comfortable. They can be found for around $20 at places like Big 5.
Let’s hold a cleat exchange this year. Look around the house and see if there are any outgrown soccer cleats. Bring them in. We’ll have a big box in the shed to put them in, and anyone can take a pair that fits. Our current collection of cleats is getting a little old and runs to the smaller sizes.
Disc: Each Ultimate player will receive their own Hyla disc. Bring your disc to every practice.
Water Bottle: Hydration is absolutely imperative for Ultimate Frisbee. Having a water bottle (with your name on it) at practice and games is essential because drinking water is not readily accessible at our field or at the game fields.
Snacks & Food: It is highly recommended that each player have a small snack before practice. Players should eat a good breakfast before the games. There will be no food at the games and players must pack food for the day. Players may buy food on the ferry so long as it is not junky, caffeinated or detrimental to athletic performance.
Athletic Clothing: Shorts and t-shirts are fine when it’s warm. Athletic pants (not jeans), several layers and a jacket are important when it’s cold and wet. Rain gear and umbrellas are useful while waiting to sub-in and while waiting for games. Come prepared for cold and rainy conditions during practices and games. Ultimate games are never canceled on account of cold, wind, or rain, just wet field conditions.
Jersey: A Hyla Frisbee jersey will be checked out to each player. It can be returned at the end of the season, if you want to keep it or if you lose it you will be charged the cost of the jersey.
Bring: Your disc, cleats, snack and water bottle to every practice and game.
A Tale of Two Teams: We have a large squad of Ulti players, allowing us to split into two teams each Saturday. The middle school league has different brackets that allow teams to meet teams of comparable skill and experience level. This season we are entered in the ‘B’ and ‘C’ brackets. All 8th graders will play in the ‘B’ bracket, most of the time 6th graders will be in the ‘C’ bracket and the 7th graders will play on one or the other on a given weekend.
Commitment: Games are scheduled on Saturdays beginning March 17th and ending April 29th. Games, like practice, are required as part of your commitment to the team. Obviously, family plans or other sports may necessitate that you miss an occasional game. We really need advance notice so we can plan accordingly.
Location:Games will be held on the Magnuson Fields at Magnuson Park, located at 65th and Sand Point Way. Enter Magnuson Park at 65th and Sand Point Way, drive straight back for 1/2 mile then turn left at the intersection (see signs for playfields) and take the next available left and head to the parking lot. Look for the Hyla bus in the parking lot and walk behind the small building (bathrooms) to see the Frisbees flying and know you’re in the right spot. Please Note: Magnuson Fields and Sand Point Fields are both located in Magnuson Park. Be sure you go to Magnuson Fields.

Game Cancellation:
Games will be canceled if the fields are too wet but they will not be canceled for rain. Call the Ultimate hot line 781-5840 on Saturday morning to check for cancellations. Ultimate information is also on the web -http://www.discnw.org/events/SpringMS.html. This web site is full of great information: schedule, directions, rules, results, etc. Look for the Middle School Spring League information on the right hand panel.
Spring Reign:
This year’s Spring Reign will be held on April 28th & 29th. Held in Burlington at the Skagit River Park, Spring Reign is a perennial highlight of Hyla’s Ultimate season, and includes teams from all over the West Coast and Canada. 72 middle and high school teams are expected this year. It’s an amazing event to take part in. We’ll provide specifics of plans and costs as we get closer to the date. Because Spring Reign is immediately after our Catlin Gabel track meet, we have entered one Hyla team. This enables us to give our athletes a day off. We will create two teams, one going up Saturday and the other on Sunday.
