Admissions
Prospective students and their parents often ask what we look for in selecting students for the school. Simply stated we seek to match a student’s ability and needs with the goals and resources of our school.
We actively seek a diverse student body. We aim for a spectrum of capabilities, interests, and personalities. We look for students whose growth we can foster, and who will—in turn—enrich and believe in our school community and its efforts.
The admissions process begins with an evening open house in January which presents our faculty and program to interested parents and adults. In February, we invite families to a second open house on a Sunday afternoon. This is a less structured opportunity to tour the school, visit with faculty members, and participate in activities designed to acquaint children with our program. Prospective students are asked to spend a day visiting the school as part of the application process.
We do not require any special testing as part of the admissions process. All written application forms and the student visit must be completed by the first week in March. Families are notified of admission decisions in early April.
Hyla has a financial aid fund to help ensure that the school is an option for all families, regardless of their financial resources. Approximately a quarter of our students receive aid. Interested families send financial information to be processed by a company called School and Student Service for Financial Aid.
This service is used by independent schools nation-wide to determine what portion of tuition a family can pay. Hyla tries to match our resources to those estimates. Families interested in applying for aid need to obtain the forms from us and submit them in January or February. Our admission decisions, however, are made on a need-blind basis. Financial aid offers are made within a few weeks of acceptance.
Hyla Middle School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, disability, national or ethnic origin, or other legally protected status in admission of otherwise qualified students or in providing access to the rights, privileges, programs, or activities generally available to all students and their families, including educational policies, financial aid programs, athletic, extra-curricular, other school-administered programs and activities, and hiring or employment practices.
