6th Grade Humanities Teacher

Full-time position

Hyla Middle School, an independent school of 90 students on Bainbridge Island outside of Seattle, Washington, is seeking to hire a 6th grade Humanities teacher. From the school’s beginning in 1993, our focus has been solely on the middle school ages (grades 6th through 8th), and we are proud of the program we have developed to foster growth in these formative years.

Hyla 6th graders take a variety of courses, but each student has two periods a day in this integrated English and social studies course, making the Humanities teacher and curriculum central to their experience at Hyla in their first year at the school.

The ideal candidate for this job would possess a strong ability to develop and teach curriculum that directly addresses core language arts skills, while also doing the same to deliver an engaging social studies curriculum that both stands on its own and augments the language arts experience.

Hyla accepts a diverse student body, and one of those areas of diversity is in learning styles and abilities, so a successful teacher in this position needs to be able to differentiate curriculum to meet students where they are and move them forward.

The position also includes teaching electives, serving as a mentor for a clean crew advisory group, and active involvement in other activities expected of our teachers, including mini-term classes, school trips, parent-teacher conferences, and curriculum presentations to parents and prospective parents, and writing evaluations of student progress.

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Classroom experience teaching students of middle-school age, preferably 6th graders in particular
  • Experience and ability in teaching writing and reading, designing curriculum, and differentiating instruction.
  • Ability to link social studies units with language arts so that students’ understanding and enjoyment of both are enriched.

Application process:

Please submit the following materials to Paul Carroll, the interim head, via email at paulc@hylamiddleschool.org

  • a cover letter
  • your current resume
  • a statement of what draws you to this job at Hyla, and what your background and experience would allow you to bring to us.

If chosen to move forward in the application process, an interview would be arranged, and then, for finalists, visiting the school and teaching a class to two 6th grade sections would be expected.

This position will remain open until filled.

Salary is based on teachers’ salaries competitive with similar independent schools in the Northwest and commensurate with experience. Retirement and health insurance benefits are included.
